In Latvia everybody recognizes the fabled hero named Lāčplēsis, but another one – Kurbads has remained in the shadows until now. Born from a mare and gifted with extraordinary fortitude, Kurbads shows that physical strength alone is not enough, and in his travels along with his brothers he uses strength and dexterity to defeat giants, devils and even the Snake Witch. This book offers an opportunity to see the old folk tale in a new and vivid form not only using digitally drawn illustrations but also incorporating augmented reality animations and music by the Latvian folk metal band Skyforger. Folk songs, tales and legends are the reflection of our mindset, and mythological heroes, present in the folk lore of every nation, are significant symbols of strength and wisdom which continue to live and evolve even in the modern world. In this book the tale of Kurbads has become more contemporary and concentrated yet retaining its particular folk code. Marika Eglīte participated in creating the illustrations, and the augmented reality animations were created by Oliver Pavicevic.
