While maintaining an interest in folklore for years, I have created various illustrations and products as I found that it’s a marvellous way of spreading information about the Latvian culture and folklore in a more exciting way. Because of this I found myself in need of creating a brand. As I often view subjects related to the dark side of folklore, naturally, I looked towards to underworld realm for inspiration and Pekle was born. It does not have connotation of evil associated with the Christian hell. More likely it is a place where the primal chaotic energies whirl and stir, feeding and giving birth to the roots of trees and plants, and all creatures. Associations with Pekle are also evoked by the black color which is always present in my art. Within the graphic identity minimalism melds with shapes of nature and ethnography creating a laconic image. Snakes, waterbirds, archaeologic ornaments and plants – images characteristic to Latvian and Baltic folklore can be found throughout the prints of shirts, posters and cards. The shirts are always accompanied by a booklet providing a deeper insight into the meaning, symbols and archaeological examples used in the illustration.
