Every year the contemporary culture forum “Baltā nakts” (‘White night’) delights the inhabitants and guests of Riga with cultural events during the dark hours. In 2023 the culture and folk art centre “Ritums” together with the council of Riga decided to begin a new tradition – enlivening the town hall square with dance rhythms. The title “Vālda” which means ‘white’ in Livonian, hides a reference to the synthesis of the traditional and the modern, as for many years “Baltā nakts” is considered a bright manifestation of Latvian contemporary culture. Ethno-disco combines traditional Livonian melodies with the beats of techno and electronic music.
